The importance of the contribution of Jonathan Sisson (1692–1749) to the scientific revolution and global aspirations of English society in the first half of the eighteenth century and the development and spread of organised Freemasonry in the same period, has only come to be fully appreciated in recent years. His legacy up till then rested in a number of the mathematical and surveying instruments that bear his and his son Jeremiah’s trademark and which are held in various observatories and museums throughout the world.
